A Word from the Deacons….
Members of Grace Presbyterian Church have an opportunity to aid in Hurricane Katrina recovery efforts on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi January 13-16, 2006.
Come, let us serve God together!
EACM (Eastern Area Christian Ministries):
Volunteers Needed!
Approximately 35 people are needed each week to work at EACM.
Volunteer Times: Mondays 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
Wednesdays 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Fridays 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 p.m.
Each month the membership of Grace brings assigned items to replenish the shelves of EACM. In addition, many make monthly monetary donations to assist in buying groceries at wholesale prices for distribution to carefully screened clients of EACM.
In the summer, collections of school supplies and school uniforms are taken for the children of clients there.
At Thanksgiving, donations of holiday meal fixings are given; and, at Christmas holiday gift bags with food and toys are distributed.
A great many members of Grace are actively involved in volunteering at EACM.
CHILDREN’S HOPE:
Every month on the third Thursday night, a meal (for approximately 15-18 people) is provided to some of the families that find themselves at Children’s Hospital due to an illness of a child in their family. This project is a wonderful opportunity for individuals, classes or organizations within the church to get involved with. For additional information on how you can help, contact David Perry.
FIRST LIGHT WOMEN’S SHELTER:
A meal for 50-75 ladies at the First Light Shelter in downtown Birmingham is served one Saturday of each month by members of Grace.
OLD FIREHOUSE MEN’S SHELTER:
A meal for 60-90 men housed at the Old Firehouse Men’s Shelter is served one Saturday each month.
KNIT WITS:
Open to anyone who would like to learn to knit. This group is knitting scarves to be used in various mission projects in the future. They meet on the first Thursday night (6:30) and the third Saturday morning(10:00) of each month at the church. Join the fun!
SIMON THE LOVING LION:
A ministry of Children’s Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama, where stuffed lions are given to children primarily in the ICU to “hold onto” while they are hospitalized, then keep! The lions have a tag on them with the name othe person or organization that has donated the lion. Each lion cost $25. On ONE Sunday in September, Grace Presbyterian donated $1000+ to purchase lions!
PARTNERSHIP IN CARING:
This partnership with Children’s Hospital assists with the final burial expenses of children who have died while at Children’s Hospital of Alabama. The Chaplains and Social Workers at Childrens review each case individual and make these funds available to the family as they are available. Grace pledges a minimum of $1000 each year to this program.
TRUE VINE EVANGELICAL MINISTRIES:
The Mission Committee of GPC has donated $1,000 to repair the roof of the ministries facilility in the Avondale area of Birmingham. This ministry is actively involved in working with recovering drug and alcohol users and to those recently released from prison. A work day to make further repairs to the property is scheduled in the near future.
